Why Abstract Sequential?

Stephanie12th Nov 2009personal, , , ,

Short answer: it’s my thinking style :)

It means I enjoy theory, logic, precision and abstract thought and that I learn best through lecture, independent research, and following procedures. This means I love web design but makes my blog very, very boring.

It’s one of four learning styles as categorized by Dr. Anthony F. Gregorc. (I totally just Googled that). I first heard about my style from my teacher and friend Cheryl Atwater. The thinking styles are actually very useful for figuring out how to deal with people. For example, if you’re discussing something with me you’re more likely to persuade me with logic than heartfelt pleas ;)

The other three styles are: abstract random, concrete random, and concrete sequential. The fun stuff starts once you know which you are or which one that person at work who drives you up the wall is. Floating Neutrinos has a great information page summarizing each style’s learning preferences, strengths, and weaknesses.

You may be able to figure out which one is you just by reading the descriptions, but here’s a good old fashioned pen and paper quiz to help you figure it out.

Should I stay or should I go?

What should a personal website look like? What should it be for? Am I a person or a business? And what if the latest trend is for your business to be human. Stephaniehobson.ca was supposed to be a personal blog for business stuff but that’s, well, *boring* for me and for you. So I’m thinking of re-doing it.

I’m going to use this site to bring together all my activities from around the web in one place. Yeah, I know, I always have big plans, but this time I have a deadline (I hope)! I would like it done before I attend @media 2009.

But I’m stalled on starting because I’m caught in a debate between leaving the other sites as the authoritative source and trying to make local copies of everything in case those other sources disappear (yes I kept my bookmarks on magnolia, how did you know?).

The public vs private nature of this space is also a bit of a conundrum. My business contacts and potential employers *will* see this space first if they Google me. This is my first impression, what does it say about me if I’ve been listening to ABBA and bookmarking lol cats? (Yeah, okay, I could be worse.)

If you can’t say something nicely…

I have lots to say but trouble finding the time and words to say it.

Blog posts I hope to make in the next two weeks:

  • Taking credit where credit is due – in response to a discussion about women in IT at zeldman.com.
  • My thoughts on the hiring process and the job market and why I do what I do where I do for the pay I get.
  • Some of the steps we’re taking to convert our templates from tables within tables within tables to just… one table, well it’s an improvement.
  • Highlights of our presentation at CADE and my thoughts on the rest of the conference.

Until then, if you think of yourself as a web designer – go take A List Apart’s Web Designer survey.

Don’t judge me on my code

Just like the current BCIT site’s code is horrible thanks to our restrictive CMS I’m not happy with my current blog theme, please don’t judge me on it.

Hello World

Stephanie5th Mar 2007personal, webdesign

I’ve been wanting a professional blog for a while now. It’s funny how there’s somethings you can tell complete strangers and there’s some things you can’t.
